Technical Considerations in the Design of near Surface Disposal Facilities for Radioactive Waste

چکیده

FOREWORD The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has, since its inception, recognized the importance of radioactive waste management. Low and intermediate level radioactive wastes are produced in almost all countries and their safe management is of great importance. Near surface disposal of the wastes is an option being practised or planned in many countries. There is a growing need in the countries for additional information and guidance on all aspects of this disposal option. Good design plays an important role in ensuring operational as well as long term safety of near surface disposal facilities. Issues relating to the design of both small and large near surface disposal facilities were discussed at an IAEA Symposium on the Since 1977, the IAEA has been pursuing an active programme on the disposal of radioactive wastes. The areas covered include generic and regulatory activities, performance and safety assessments, site selection, criteria, design, construction, operation and closure of disposal facilities. A number of valuable reports have been published through this programme. Although an earlier IAEA publication discusses briefly the design aspects of near surface disposal facilities, it was recognised that a report is needed that covers in depth the various activities involved in the design of near surface disposal facilities for low and intermediate level wastes. This publication is intended to fill the gap and reflects decades of experience in IAEA Member States in this particular area. It is hoped that Member States, in particular the developing countries, will find the report useful for their programmes to implement near surface facilities. The use of particular designations of countries or territories does not imply any judgement by the publisher, the IAEA, as to the legal status of such countries or territories, of their authorities and institutions or of the delimitation of their boundaries. The mention of names of specific companies or products (whether or not indicated as registered) does not imply any intention to infringe proprietary rights, nor should it be construed as an endorsement or recommendation on the part of the IAEA.

Radioactive waste disposal: Global experience and challenges

Since the world's first disposal of radioactive waste in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in 1944, considerable experience has been acquired in the field. The first disposal site — intended for "actively contaminated broken glassware or materials not sufficiently clean to be used in other work" — was a simple trench filled with unconditioned waste located on the Oak Ridge site. Similar approaches were ado...

Use of strategic environmental assessment in the site selection process for a radioactive waste disposal facility in Slovenia.

The benefits of strategic environmental considerations in the process of siting a repository for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) are presented. The benefits have been explored by analyzing differences between the two site selection processes. One is a so-called official site selection process, which is implemented by the Agency for radwaste management (ARAO); the other is a...

Robotic Inspection of Nuclear Waste Storage Facilities

Introduction Safe disposal of nuclear waste is a difficult problem. Long-term plans are to house nuclear waste permanently in underground facilities. In the near-term however, nuclear waste is stored in temporary storage facilities at various sites around the country. Federal and state regulations require periodic inspection of these storage facilities to insure storage vessel integrity and ver...

The Regulatory Perspective: Role of Regulatory Review of the Safety Case and Feedback to Site Investigation

Swiss Legislation requires for all types of radioactive waste the safe and permanent disposal in deep geological repositories within Switzerland by stipulating a step-by-step procedure for site selection and licensing of the disposal facilities. Each step requires safety considerations or safety analyses which are reviewed by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate. The principle steps of...

Corrosion behaviour of steel rebars embedded in a concrete designed for the construction of an intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility

The National Atomic Energy Commission of the Argentine Republic is developing a nuclear waste disposal management programme that contemplates the design and construction of a facility for the final disposal of intermediate-level radioactive wastes. The repository is based on the use of multiple, independent and redundant barriers. The major components are made in reinforced concrete so, the dur...
